Understanding CRA’s New Automatic Tax Filing And Why Access Centre’s Tax Clinic Still Matters
This year, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is expanding its automatic tax-filing services to make it easier for some Canadians to file their income tax returns.
If you’ve heard about “automatic filing” and are wondering what it means and whether you still need support from our tax clinic here’s what you need to know
What Is Automatic Tax Filing?
The CRA’s new initiative is designed to help individuals with lower incomes and very simple tax situations file their taxes more easily.
Through services like SimpleFile, eligible individuals may be invited to file by phone, online, or by paper with a simplified process. The CRA uses information it already has on file (like T4 slips) to prepare the return.
SimpleFile Digital is a free online service that eligible individuals can use to file their income tax and benefit return, with or without an invitation. When using this filing method, you only need to answer a series of quick questions. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) uses your answers, plus the information the CRA has on file, to complete and process a tax return for you.
The goal is simple:
To help more people file their taxes and access important benefits and credits.

The Pros of Automatic Filing
There are some clear advantages to this new program:
It Makes Filing Easier
For people with very straightforward tax situations, the process can be quicker and less intimidating. Also, if someone is housebound and not able to make it down to our tax clinic but their taxes are straightforward, a simple phone call can get it done in no time.
It Helps More People Access Benefits
Many individuals miss out on benefits like:
- GST/HST credit
- Canada Child Benefit
- Provincial and territorial credits
Automatic filing may help reduce the number of people who miss out simply because they didn’t file.
It’s Convenient
For eligible individuals, answering a few simple questions may be enough to complete a return.
The Limitations to Consider
While this program is helpful, it isn’t right for everyone.
Eligibility Is Limited
Automatic filing is mainly for individuals with:
- Very simple tax situations
- Low income
- No self-employment income
- No rental income
- Minimal deductions
Many community members will not qualify.
The CRA Only Uses Information It Has
If you have:
- Medical expenses
- Disability-related deductions
- Childcare expenses
- Moving expenses
- Tuition credits
- Other claimable deductions
These may not automatically be included unless you actively update the return.
That could mean missing out on money you’re entitled to.
Technology and Accessibility Barriers
Some automatic options still require comfort with phone systems or online tools which isn’t accessible for everyone.
Why Filing with Our CVITP Tax Clinic Still Matters
At the Penticton and Area Access Centre, we offer tax filing through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) — a program supported by the CRA and delivered locally by trained volunteers.
Here’s why many people still benefit from filing with us:
Personalized Support
Our volunteers review your full situation to ensure all eligible credits and deductions are claimed not just what’s already on file.
Maximizing Your Benefits
We help ensure you receive everything you qualify for, including federal and provincial benefits that can significantly impact your financial stability.
Safe, Supportive Environment
As a community organization committed to providing a safe and welcoming space — particularly for the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community — we understand that navigating financial systems can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to provide respectful, inclusive support.
Peace of Mind
When you file with us, you can ask questions, clarify concerns, and feel confident your return has been completed accurately.
Should You Use Automatic Filing?
For some individuals with very simple tax situations, automatic filing may be a helpful option.
But it is not one-size-fits-all.
If you’re unsure whether you qualify, if your situation has changed, or if you simply prefer human support, our CVITP tax clinic remains a trusted and beneficial option.
